“Flourish” marks 6 Cardinal’s return to the traditional album after releasing a slew of loose singles with various producers over the past year. Keeping in line with the album’s botanical motif, “Flourish” represents 6’s journey back to his musical roots. On the production side, “Flourish” forgoes the electronic-influenced production heard in 6’s recent output in favor of the soulful and sample-heavy brand of production marking his earlier projects, which is provided on “Flourish” by 6’s longtime friend, collaborator, and Brooklyn-based boom-bap maestro Ace Fayce. On the lyrical side, “Flourish” signals 6’s departure from the amorphous lyrics offered in much of his recent music and instead showcases more focused lyricism, touching on subjects such as love (LuvJawn), drug use (Royals), and the pitfalls of working dreary 9 to 5 jobs (Nine2Five), among others.
“Flourish” began as a simple idea: 6 would fly from South Florida to Brooklyn for a few days with hopes to capture New York City’s ambience and his creative chemistry with Ace in one collection of songs created from scratch. Indeed, prior to 6’s arrival in Brooklyn no lyrics had been written and no beats had been made. However, armed with their musical rapport and certain unnamed members of the fungus and cannabinoid families, over the next three days the MC/producer duo conceptualized, produced, wrote, and recorded the album. The finished product is an homage to the concept of growth: the cultivation of the duo’s friendship; the germination of their creative chemistry; and, finally, the maturation of both artists’ sounds collaboratively and respectively. Though the album certainly stands as a testament to the duo’s own growth, the statement they intend to convey above all else is an imperative to its listeners: Flourish. Flourish in life; in love; and in spirit.
