5. serendipity

serendipity

Serendipity is an atmospheric experimental animation film which transports its contend in an associative way of reception, like mental leaps or dream-like pictures do. Its title points directly to the possibility of ambivalence in reading it and beyond that at the way I worked at the film, especially in finding the pictures. The whole film is an experiment which tries to reach the individual feelings connected with pictures and sounds. Only a abstract poem is a point of orientation concerning its message.

6. Excavating the Psyche: A Social History of Psychiatry in Bulgaria

Excavating the Psyche: A Social History of Psychiatry in Bulgaria

“Excavating the Psyche” puts forth new perspectives on the social histories of psychiatry and mental illness during the Communist period. With original scholarship, archival photographs and a multimedia art installation it poses a question that is both anthropological and historical. How did Bulgarians experience psychological crisis in a social, cultural and political environment dominated by materialist ideologies of the body and self? This installation imagines the physical and psychological space of a routine psychiatric consultation during the communist period. Merging scholarly and creative sensitivities, the installation features concepts and animation by Julian Chehirian, with the collaboration of American composer Dylan Burchett. In 1950 a decree emerged from the USSR that declared Pavlov’s work on physiology and nerve systems as the only scientific approach to the study of psychology and the treatment of mental illnesses. In Bulgaria the imposition of a Soviet psychiatric model came only decades after we made significant leaps in applying diverse and modern approaches to understanding and treating mental illnesses (in the period 1890-1943). The Soviet model examined the biological and physiological dimensions of mental illness while discouraging analysis of nonempirical, psychological phenomena. Private practice was outlawed. Alternative approaches to psychotherapy were suppressed. This resulted in a widespread medicalization of psychological crisis and a practice of indefinitely institutionalizing abnormal individuals. The ‘psyche’ was rejected and in its place the body would became a dominant locus for analysis and treatment. Rather than present a static condemnation of psychiatry in the PRB, the idea behind this exhibition is to provoke examination of the social and scientific experience of mental illness during the Communist period. It will propose the question: what are human and cultural consequences of a government’s standardization or suppression of particular approaches to mental healthcare? Julian Chehirian is an interdisciplinary researcher on the social history of psychotherapy and psychopathology in Bulgaria. He makes use of oral history, archival and ethnographic approaches. During the 2014-15 academic year he is a Fulbright scholar at the New Bulgarian University. He is interested in how trauma and psychological crisis is made sense of in a cultural environment dominated by materialist philosophy, social and political ideology. Dylan Burchett is an American composer from Florida. Dylan contributes to “Excavating the Psyche” a sonic interpretation of interiority, trauma and the medicalization of personal crisis.

7. Dieter's Welt (Trailer)

Dieter's Welt (Trailer)

The 61-year-old Dieter is a friendly, fun-loving and sociable person. The film is a journey through his life. His expression of joy and fear reveal his infantile nature. The camera always focusing on him does not bother him anymore. This allows the audience to experience his daily life. His mother reflects, tells about Dieter's and her own life. Dieter himself cannot do this. Through his mental leaps, a long and serious conversation is not possible. But his actions and loving nature shows how communicative he is in his own special way. F5 - Refresh, Sound healing

The project was made in collabaration with Varun Loiwal + Chandni Kabra Over the years work has become more stressful and competitive. Many studies claim that 4 out of 10 employees are suffering from stress and anxiety. People are more aware of this situation and are willing to fix them. With the increase in competition at workplaces, better technology, and automation, people are no longer doing simple jobs, but multitasking and working long hours. Most of it requires thinking. In this context, we designed an installation which falls in place to release stress and to help relax. Our installation engages the user to take small breaks and refresh themselves, especially because it gives instant gratification and it doesn't require much effort from the user. This is an attempt, especially to workplaces, a way to reduce the stress and anxiety and increase efficiency. Happy and calm people are more efficient, take better decisions, remain healthy. We tested our installation with 50 or more people at their workplace. They were very enthusiastic to get it installed. Their response validated our design by leaps and bounds. Designing for mental well-being is crucial as it affects millions of people who are suffering from stress and anxiety. Mental health is going to become one of the biggest medical concerns in the future.

Video by Keine Zeit Medien — http://keinezeitmedien.de Big thx to giphy & tumblr community Keine Zeit Medien music video for the track »4/20 Jam« by Urban Homes (off their sophomore album »Jams« out now on Altin Village & Mine) is a hypnotic labyrinth about drug culture and about the hazy state of mind. Here, drug usage also works as a wider metaphor for letting loose of one's ratio and of a functionality that is expected at any time. Not just a numerical rebellion, the concept of 4/20 confronts this incessant pressure to achieve and perform 24/7. The ADHD-evoking stimulus satiation is composed of found footage and a potpourri of pop cultural gif-animations. The logic and meaning behind this visual overkill centered at the meeting point of internet phenomena and Dada remains undecipherable and irrational, not unlike pot heads' mental leaps and mind frames.

He was important hero in the Ballet Russes of Sergey Diaghilev, celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterizations. Also Nijinsky was admired for his seemingly gravity-defying leaps. In his private life he was close to his curator and boss as well – to powerful and kind of cruel person Sergey Diaghilev. They were lovers for few years, while Nijinsky was dancing and curating performances. At the end of his amazingly bright period of fame, he got married to Ramola during one sea trip. He was upset after the quarrel with Diaghilev; and this girl who was rich and obsessed with him just almost caught him in the right moment. When Diaghilev found out the fact of marriage of Nijinsky, he left him, replaced him in all performances and never wanted to be a part of his life again. Vaslav Nijinsky spent rest of his life after ballet with his wife in the Switzerland countryside. He was almost alone and completely mad, isolated and with his sense of reality through the mental diseases. He drew a lot of incredibly complicated schemes of never happened ballets. He thought that he is a clown, son of a God, just doll and he intended to write day by day and do nothing else. Actually, he was the first dancer who started to explore new way of movement (then it becomes to contemporary dance as a new style of performing). Having read his diary I decided to change the script of my film and I decided to leave him alone in film. I put my image of Nijinsky’s soul into this film, where we can see a girl, contemporary dancer. She is in light and in darkness. She is dancing and just lying. For me this video seems like retranslation of feeling, which was inside Nijinsky during his life after dance. Video / Moscow 2015

KRIEG UND KUNST. Ein Gespräch mit Friedrich Kittler.

Berlin-Treptow, 15. September 2003. WAR AND ART Video interview with Friedrich Kittler by Egon Bunne When a number of philosophers in France started to upgrade the outdated fragmentary media theories of Bert Brecht and Walter Benjamin at the beginning of the 1980s, it soon became clear that the most important voice in Germany on this topic would be Friedrich Kittler. The publications by Friedrich Kettler, who holds a doctorate in German, are characterised by the perspective of a media historian who sees his research subject as a kind of modern archaeology, contrary to the furious mental leaps of those such as Jean Baudrillard or Paul Virilio's apocalyptic prophecies of doom, for instance. Since the mid-1980s, "Grammophon Film Typewriter" has developed into a cult book for those German intellectuals for whom Adorno's critical analysis of the civil capitalist society no longer sufficed to capture and interpret the computer age in its diversity. Thanks to his interdisciplinary approach, Kittler's publication attracts wide interest among sociologists and philosophers, publicists and mathematicians alike. In his subsequent publications "Optische Medien" and "Draculas Vermächtnis", news technologies increasingly became the focus of attention of his research. The conclusion that our media landscape is based on inventions and developments of the military complex was very alarming for many TV employees, but extremely inspiring for some media artists. Kittler's hypotheses and topics suddenly gained topical relevance when the US invasion of Iraq developed early on into a war of propaganda before the UN Security Council. Over and over again, his portrait appeared on the TV screen to explain the novelty of the images to the favourably disposed audience. This interview was recorded in Kittler's apartment in Berlin-Treptow on 15 September 2003. (...) Against this backdrop, my interview with Friedrich Kittler is less aimed at doing justice to his previous work and his sphere of influence: I am more interested in his evaluation of the war as a catalyst for cultural history. I believe I had the impression of an element of doubt in several sequences of his speeches and interviews that pacifism is a sustainable model for developing our future and advancing modernity. Thus, a mixture of the topic "War and art" was created, from which I expect the person of Friedrich Kittler to be made more transparent than is possible in the scientific context, alongside ingenious aphorisms and historical footnotes. Flashbacks to the ancient world in our interview herald his exit from the media theory two years before he made his public announcement. Maybe one day there will be the opportunity to scrutinise Friedrich Kittler's decision to shift the object of research in his late work to pre-Christian antiquity. Minotaur : A suite of poems by Danijela Hlis

mindshare were recipients of Arts SA’s Strategic Community Partnership : Community Grant for 2014 working with the Media Resource Centre and Access 2 Arts. As part of this project mindshare invited poets, writers and individuals with lived experience of a mental health issue to submit poetry to a competition called When words come to life. Our judge Jude Aquilina then selected 8 poems from a diverse range of applicants which were turned into digital stories during a workshop run by the Media Resource Centre. Danijela Hlis was one of the selected poets with her poem 'Minotaur : a suite of poems', this is her story. M I N O T A U R by Danijela Hlis ( SUITE OF POEMS ) CHILD IN LOW TIDE From a deep crevasse in her mind a butterfly with clipped wings stills the girl’s fear deeper into the mud. Surfacing like crabs in low tide are seeping wounds of an abandoned child: how to hide? GIRL IN HIGH TIDE Courage, smile, determination, painted lips, made up face to mask the scars, let rising tide over bandaged sorrows. High on painkillers, wine, poetry and prose a gleeful malevolent ghost of life in a cemetery of regrets. Behind dark purdah of fear and loss, her hidden corals in a monster tide. THE THUNDERSTORM OF A MINOTAUR (*) Breadcrumbs of hope shattered, imprisoned in the labyrinth of monsters. Her husband’s limbs under an electric train, her mother dying on the floor of a nursing home. The woman childless womb a slice of stale bread. Storms in her heart. But life goes on. Defiantly like a dandelion pushing out of snow fields the woman keeps crawling, climbing, walking. Tides keep changing. OLD WOMAN AND THE RAINBOW Glorious oblivion, a touch of self acceptance, the woman leaps life’s obstacles. A cormorant in the hand of the creator, preparing for another dive. It is not what she can forget but that which she never knew that she regrets: the gallop of Equus,*** consuming passion & obsession, total abandon. Sun is painting shadows her love for life grows, the fabric of her existence a kaleidoscope of bucket lists. Moving forward always forward , there is power in persistence. Riding rainbows of hope and faith, in the wisdom of content.

Urban Homes — »Jams« 2xLP/CD/Digital Can be purchased: physical — http://shop.altinvillage.de/product/urban-homes-jams digital — https://altinvillage.bandcamp.com/album/jams Video by Keine Zeit Medien — http://keinezeitmedien.de Big thx to giphy & tumblr community Keine Zeit Medien's music video for the track »4/20 Jam« by Urban Homes is a hypnotic labyrinth about drug culture and about the hazy state of mind. Here, drug usage works as a wider metaphor for letting loose of one's ratio and of a functionality that is expected of us at any time. More than just a rebellion in numbers, the concept of 4/20 confronts this incessant pressure to achieve and perform 24/7. — On two 12”s and over the course of a staggering 78 minutes, big things are happening on »Jams«, Urban Homes’ monumental sophomore album. The highly ambititous attempt at a certain history of dance music, a sweaty night on the dancefloor, an excursion into the fog...But one thing at a time: The 13 Jams go back to recordings of years of communal, midi- and hardware-based jam sessions which, over three years, were painstakingly discarded, refined, condensed, reconstructed and provided with occasional guest vocals by Hanitra Wagner (Ωracles, Die Heiterkeit). The album was mixed by Jan Philipp Janzen (Von Spar) at Dumbo Studios, mastered by Cem Oral at Jammin’ Masters. Sonja Deffner (Die Heiterkeit, Jason & Theodor) is responsible for the stunning gatefold artwork. On »Jams«, Benjamin Riedl, Stephan Weinand and Oliver Bersin explore a history of dance music that is retraced in the 13 tracks: The seemingly clear cut references in titles such as »Verdub Lang Her (Stripped Down Killer Dub Jam)«, »Blue Note Jam« or »As High Acid Can Get (☺ Jam)«, however, are not to be taken as letters of intent, but—despite the playful handling of genre conventions and clichés—as hommages to the immaterial architecture of the club: the atmosphere, the vibe, the jam. In its rich texture, the dramatic composition of »Jams« reconstructs the resonance space of an excessive, foggy, and steamy night at the club, thereby approaching its point of interest. Despite the clear club compatibility (each of the 13 tracks will work on a dancefloor worth its salt), Urban Homes do not shy away from sticky harmonic arrangements and melodies that are bound to be called »pop«. They do however, and this is one of the points of this great album, avoid any overarching narrative of organicity or authenticity which might refer the record to a context of »indie« music. Unlike the acclaimed and award-winning debut »Centres«, which wore the socialization of the (previously four) Urban Homes on its sleeve, this is rootless, nomadic music that is in the most beautiful sense out there. So far out there, in fact, that we seem to make out figures such as Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra through the ever-present (see titles such as »4/20 Jam« or »Summer Rolls [Midnight Munchies Jam]« for reference) fog. What seems so effortless, casual and relaxed over the entire run time, finally, is in fact merely evidence of the band’s musical mastery and precision: The staging of gaps, the fraying, dripping track ends and its general weirdness is part of the modeling of the history of a music that formed without a »quantise« command. —
