1. The Death Of Pop - Mirage

The Death Of Pop - Mirage

Taken from the forthcoming Flexizine (7" flexidisc record and 20 page zine) Fifths, to be released 28th July 2014. Pre order now: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/529271-the-death-of-pop-fifths-flexizine-ep --------------------- Following on from how much we enjoyed putting out the recent Fear of Men release, we have decided to make the flexizine (a 7” flexidisc record accompanied by a 20 page zine) a quarterly fixture. With no further ado, it gives us great pleasure to introduce issue 2. The new EP from Bournemouth based 5 piece The Death of Pop. Made up of three brothers and two cousins, The Death of Pop produce the sort of well-polished sound you’d expect from a tight knit family unit. We have long admired their jangley shoegaze from afar, but it was only when they sent us a lovely cassette demo did we finally make acquaintance. Opening track ‘Whenever’ picks up where excellent previous single ‘Sun in my Eyes’ left off. Dueling guitars, blissful summery melodies and a magic carpet ride of fuzz and distortion. Here is Mirage, track two on the EP and the track which we have committed to vinyl. Once again it's a shoegazing stunner whilst the EP’s further three tracks are testament to The Death of Pop’s ability to consistently craft jangle pop masterpieces that engulf you in a glowing warmth. As previously mentioned, the EP is set to be released on a lovely blue transparent 7” flexidisc accompanied by a 20 page magazine. The flexidisc will feature the sub-6-minute drones of track 2 Mirage and a download code for the full EP will be included with the magazine. We have elected to release music in this format as we were getting a bit frustrated with the standard 7” release and realised we could be giving you a bit more for your money. The release is ltd to 250 copies and set to be released on the 4th August. You can pre-order your copy from our shop right now.

2. White Sands - The Wait

White Sands - The Wait

White Sands are Conan Roberts (Mazes), Sophy Hollington (Novella) and John Arthur Webb (Male Bonding). With the obvious soundings and influence from their respective ‘other’ projects, White Sands heightens a darker and far more furious edge to any of those previous. ‘The Wait’ drives like a freight train, packing 182 seconds of lucid frustration – “hide everything deep inside / you won’t find anything”. ‘The Wait’ is set to be released as a 7” flexidisc accompanied by a 20 page magazine / 3 track digi-single. We have elected to release music in this format as we were getting a bit frustrated with the standard 7” release and realised we could be giving you plenty more for your money. Tracklisting: 1. The Wait 2. Expect Nothing 3. Years The release is ltd to 300 copies and set to be released through Art Is Hard on the 6th October. Pre-order is available from http://artishardrecords.co.uk now.

Broadbay - Plasticine Dream

As we enter the home run of our Pizza Club series (5 more to go) we are delighted to welcome Broadbay to the fold. Landing on our radar back in March, the band had just played a gig with Home School, Bloody Knees and Birdskulls. Hopefully that should give you a pretty solid indication of what to expect from 'Plasticine Dream' - grungy emo-tinged punk rock with hooks a-plenty! If it doesn’t feel like turning them up really loud would defrost a bag of peas from 50 yards, they’re probably not doing it right. 7. Gorgeous Bully - Dissolve

Gorgeous Bully - Dissolve

Buses, politicians, friends, weather....in day to day life there's so many things you just can't rely on. Thomas Crang however (and more specifically his output as Gorgeous Bully) has always been something you can count on. From his early beginnings down in Cornwall, through to his Plymouth bedroom pop output and now his full band Manchester outfit - his prolific discography doesn't include a single duff hit. With no further ado, we'd like to introduce you to this week's Pizza Club single Dissolve. Whereas Gorgeous Bully's most recent EP (released by us back in February) saw Gorgeous Bully's first full outing as a four piece. Dissolve sees GB returning to his bedroom-pop roots and the beautiful mire of fuzz we have come to associate him with. Lyrics seem to hang in the air for brief seconds before fading away like breath on a cold day. I actually think this is one of my favourite Gorgeous Bully songs, so if you haven't listened before this should be a great introduction. As ever, three physical pizza box versions of this single will be available on our shop at 1pm (gmt). You can also buy tee's, patches and bottle openers to join the club. http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/523909-the-pizza-club

8. Gorgeous Bully - Beaucoup

Gorgeous Bully - Beaucoup

PREORDER: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/categories/gorgeous-bully-something-anorak We're delighted to be teaming up with long-time AIH pal Gorgeous Bully as well as relative newcomers Something Anorak, for a four track split 7" due for release 27th May. The two bands met whilst both living and playing in Cornwall in early 2011 and bonded over a shared love of boisterous lo-fi music. In the five years since, Something Anorak, consisting of cousins James and Chris Barrett, moved to Bristol; released an album on Howling Owl and split time writing music between working as a plumber and a postman. Meanwhile, Gorgeous Bully's Thomas Crang moved to Manchester and with no such restrictions on his time, has spent 5 years of unemployment ascending the stairs of bedroom-pop stardom whilst sharing a steady stream of songs that are "ugly and bummed and uncomfortable in all the right ways. The split features two tracks from each band and is set to be released as a cherry red 7" record on May 27th. ALSO We will be releasing a special Record Store Day version of this release - limited to 25 handcut & handnumbered 7" records. You'll find 5 in Rise Records in Bristol, 5 in Piccadilly in Manchester and 10 at our release show in Bristol at The Crofter's Rights that night.

9. Poledo - King Of Cool

Poledo - King Of Cool

The first track to be lifted from the Art Reeks 12", a collaboration between Art is Hard & Reeks of Effort. Although Poledo pummel you with a unforgettable riff for the first 30 seconds of 'King of Cool', they don't waste any time in launching into an attack on pretenders with Evan Clement's proclamation "you fail to comprehend, you don't hear The Wipers and start a band". From this point on, the song follows in much the same fashion; various yelped warnings about putting in too much effort and partying too hard matched by catchy Mascis'esque licks. Available on white 12" with a choice of four covers from https://artreeks.bandcamp.com/album/art-reeks

10. Oro Swimming Hour - Overthrown

Oro Swimming Hour - Overthrown

Taken from the forthcoming album Penrose Winoa, pre-order here: http://www.artishardrecords.co.uk/categories/oro-swimming-hour Today we're extremely excited to announce the debut album from Oro Swimming Hour; a magical two piece featuring Bristol's own Oliver Wilde and children's book illustrator Nicholas Stevenson (also of Lucky Shivers). The 16 track album mastered by Orchid Tapes Warren Hildebrand is full to the brim with freak-folk anthems, lo-fi bedroom pop and the sound of Elliot Smith summoned to a torch-lit seance. Penrose Winoa was recorded in the space of five short days in the living room of Oliver's shared house using analogue equipment. If you listen closely enough, amongst the hiss and crackle of the tape fuzz you'll pick up the comings and goings of various housemates as well as Sparklehorse the cat. With no track lasting longer than 3 minutes the album passes by in a breeze whilst inducing the feeling of a pleasantly sticky summer day. The album is due for release on 28th July on ltd edition splatter effect 12" and also on all the normal digital places, you can pre-order it now from our shop and you'll receive an instant download of two tracks. We'll also be hosting an extremely special release party in Bristol in At The Well Launderette on 21st July. Limited tickets are available for £5 and include a free risograph print designed and hand-numbered by Nicholas. There will also be a full tour announcement soon, but get in touch if you'd like Oro to play your living room, kitchen, garden or local launderette. Oliver has always been a personal hero of ours, Nicholas has created some of the best art to ever grace an Art is Hard release and Warren from Orchid Tapes had added just the sort of magic mastering dust you'd expect from someone who had a hand in Alex G's DSU. We really can't wait for you to hear this one.

Best Friends - Happy Anniversary

PRE ORDER 7" AND COMIC: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/517480-best-friends-happy-anniversary-nosebleeds-7-and-comic Doherty and heroin. Gazza and the booze. Rolf and the kids. They all eventually relapsed, and would you look at that, it's our turn now too. Having been featured on several past AIH releases, we return again to musical mystros and all-round-good-guys Best Friends. They’ve previously dominated cassette tape, CD/photo book and pizza box formats so we were running low on ideas of how to get these guys out .. obviously vinyl was a natural and long deserved progression. And if vinyl wasn’t enough for you, the band have put together a comic that will be included with each 7” (which by the way are a lovely frosted colour). All the artwork is put together by Lew Currie of Nai Harvest. "Happy Anniversary / Nosebleeds" is presented as a double AA single - the former starting slow, teasing a glimpse towards a more mature side of the band before morphing its way into a heroic climax and unleashing a true summer anthem. "Nosebleeds" is an audible cross-country train that doesn’t even have time to stop at Salisbury, taking you exactly where you want to be before you finish your packed lunch. 'Happy Anniversary / Nosebleeds' is set for release on September 23rd but is available to pre-order now. Purchase just the frosted 7” w/ comic or grab a package deal with a dope new Best Friends tee.

Bruising - Think About Death

Taken from Family Portrait pt. II due for release 11th May 2015 on marbled 12" and digital download. Pre order here: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/544699-family-portrait-pt-ii-12 Bruising formed late last year after singer and guitarist Naomi Baguley spotted Ben Lewis wearing a Perfect Pussy t-shirt in a Leeds nightclub. Bonding over a mutual love of all things fuzzy, they began messaging voice memos from their phones back and forth until, finally, they got together in the same room and started writing some songs. Since then their infectious, ear worm, fuzz pop has gained them acclaim from the NME, DIY and even Radio 1's Huw Stephens, as well as being described by GoldFlakePaint as 'The best new guitar band in the country'.

The idea was to give four bands with a similar sound and ethic their first vinyl release. We decided it was time for round two and gathered together some of our favourite new bands. This first track comes from Living Hour, a four piece from Winnipeg Canada. Steady Glazed Eyes is a a slow burning super 8 reel of psychedelic dream pop. 15. Thalassocracy - Shimensoka

Thalassocracy - Shimensoka

'Shi-men-so-ka' - a situation beyond hope; defeat is clear. Our apologies for skipping a slice; David has recently relocated to Bristol with lacking internet and Richard is still running around London. So, to relaunch this week, the latter one of us has contributed a track that was recorded with Mark Jasper at his Hackney-hideaway Sound Savers. The not-another-no-fi project is also comprised of Jake May (Grubs) and Lloyd King (Slothboat), forging scuzz and lost melodies into hopeless tales. 'Shimensoka' is more of the same, alluding optimism and closing out as a tribute to self doubt. As ever, three physical versions will be available from our store at 1pm. Catch Thalassocracy live at Brighton's Indietro Secret Festival on October 26th with special guests! Thalassocracy on FB - https://www.facebook.com/thalassocracyband

16. O. Chapman - Best Friend

O. Chapman - Best Friend

7" hand cut record, limited to 25. Available from our site from 1pm, 17.04.15: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/549666?preview=true Part three of our Hand Cut Record Club and on to someone who we’ve been invigorated with ever since we heard the opening bars of Relapser - a riffing shoegaze pop masterpiece that perfectly juxtaposed huge sounding guitars with Oliver’s softly sung verses. It was hard to escape the song, everyone we knew and trusted were sharing the song. So we’re delighted to be welcoming O. Chapman to the fold with his new single Best Friend. Stepping up from the bedroom productions showcased on the Discomfort EP, the track was recorded with Theo Verney back in February and Oliver is also backed up by 2/3 of Our Girl. Featuring the same aspirin added wooze and swelling choruses that seems to have become the customary sound of the Brighton noisemakers, Best Friend is a song with a seemingly simple message but many levels to lose yourself in. Just as with Discomfort, the Kurt Vile’esque melodies remain as Oliver sings of the sort of friendship so strong, that you’d do anything for them - even if the other half does have their faults. As with previous Hand Cut singles, Best Friend will be released on lathe cut 7″ and limited to 25 copies. The 25 copies will be available from our shop here at 1pm today! We’ve already had an email from a girl threatening to bomb our office with cockroaches if she doesn’t get a copy so I’m imagining they’ll go pretty fast. If you do miss out, don’t forget that we’re involved in Record Store Day this year and will be featuring on the Sensible Labels 12″ alongside heroes such as Alcopop, Big Scary Monsters and Howling Owl. We’ve got a new Best Friends track on there, I watched them play it last night and it’s a banger plus the record is only £10....I’ll stop with the hard sell now!

17. The Orielles - Jobin

The Orielles - Jobin

Pre order ltd edition 7" flexizine: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/568445?preview=true Back in 2014 we put out a series of flexizines (a 7" flexidisc record accompanied by a 20 page zine) from the likes of Fear of Men, The Death of Pop and White Sands. We're delighted to say we're bringing the format back whilst also welcoming The Orielles to the family! Hailing from Halifax, the Orielles formed after sisters Esme and Sid Hand-Halford met Henry Wade at a house party. Learning to play their instruments as they went along, the band have spent the past couple of years honing their craft with a string of singles and appearances at the likes of Live at Leeds, Festival no. 6, swn and Dot to Dot. We're delighted to be releasing their new EP Jobin, three tracks of infectious surf pop influenced by the band's love of riot grrrl and all things C.A. The EP opens with lead track 'Jobin' - a barnstorming amalgamation of whoops and sweet summer melodies and the rest of the EP follows in a similarly seasonal fashion. The EP is set to be released on 1st April on ltd edition flexizine; a 7" flexidisc featuring lead track Jobin, a 20 page colouring book zine illustrated by the awesome Alex Gamsu Jenkins and a download code for the full 3 track EP. Shunkan - Our Names

Buy ltd edition screenprinted comic with 3 track download: http://artishardrecords.limitedrun.com/products/546802?preview=true Following last year's double-sell out run of introductory EP 'Honey, Milk and Blood', we're delighted to welcome the return of Shunkan. 'Our Names' is the first material to emerge with her newly assembled full-band ethic, but the accessible intimacy that shone through on Marina Sakimoto's previous melodies are less than far removed. Blasting through the 2 minute mark by the skin of it's teeth, 'Our Names' is a toe tapping taster of greater things to come. We've commissioned our illustrator pals Hats & Milk to put together a comic based on 'Our Names' and are releasing it as a super ltd screenprinted A6 comic, courtesy of our buddies at Broadside. The single is due out on April 13th, but you can download it right now for free. 20. The Golden Dregs - Congratulations

The Golden Dregs - Congratulations

BUY AS A POSTCARD SINGLE WITH DOWNLOAD CODE: http://www.artishardrecords.co.uk/products/589014-postcard-club-individual-postcards Today we're delighted to unveil the fourth part of our Postcard Club, a brilliant new single from Cornish supergroup The Golden Dregs. A while back when we first released The Golden Dregs, I wrote the following: "In terms of people I have met since I started the label, Ben Woods was probably one of the first. Having tagged along with The Black Tambourines to the release party for aih02, he drunkenly haggled me down to 20p for a New Years Evil shirt. Since that formative night our paths have crossed many more times and with each occasion he seems to make more of an impression." Although that was almost three years ago (for the release of The Life Aquatic), that last line still stands true. With each recorded output he exceeds what has come before and that is certainly true of new single 'Congratulations'. It was also an excuse to dredge back up the 20p story #notoverit. Although led by Ben Woods, the project has always been collaboratively assembled as a recording project and that is certainly true of this latest cut. Ben gets by with a little help from his friends, notably Jake from The Black Tambourines doing some obscene things with the keys. The song unfurls with some wonderful couplets delivered like a red hot knife through a vat of room temperature butter and although the title suggests a celebratory tone the song actually strikes a much more somber reflective note. Whilst NME originally tried pinning the anti-garage tag on The Golden Dregs, a more accurate tag would be 60s tinged baroque pop (not quite as catchy is it?). Think the Proper Ornaments if they'd spent their youth drinking on a Cornish beach or Crystal Stilts if they spent less time noodling. Congratulations is released as part of our Postcard club and is available to order right now as a handwritten postcard with a download code, it'll also be available from all the normal digital places on the 28th April. Finally, for people who like parting with cold hard money, the single will be available at a couple of Golden Dregs shows coming up next week: 29th April - The Lock Tavern, London w/ Goddam Nobody 30th April - Sounds from the Other City, Manchester for Family Tree
